14 Spiritual Laws to Know and Use

If you think the Law of Attraction is all you need to know about spiritual law, think again…

Using spiritual power to change your life and the lives of others depends on knowing Spirit (or being aligned with God/universal intelligence) and applying spiritual laws wisely. Much attention has been paid of late to the Law of Attraction due to huge amounts of publicity around “The Secret”, which started as a book, expanded to a DVD, and then became a movie. But there are other spiritual or universal laws that can be studied and applied. The two sets of seven laws that I will describe briefly in this article are probably the best known.

Seven universal laws are attributed to Hermes Trismegistos of ancient Greece. These seven Hermetic laws are quite well known and are generally accepted by many as containing great truths. Other people believe that this is all a bunch of new age hooey; but from my own experience, I believe the truth is indeed there. The best treatment I’ve seen of the Hermetic laws is by Alan Seale in his book, Soul Mission, Life Vision.

The Seven Universal or Hermetic laws are:

The Law of Mentalism — Also known as the Law of Mind or the Law of Spirit. The law has two aspects. The first aspect states that everything is mind or spirit. Everything arises out of thought or universal consciousness. Thought creates. The second aspect is that everything exists within the mind of God, and the mind of God exists within everything. This is the core idea of many mystical traditions — that there is a great unity or oneness with God.
The Law of Correspondence — This is often stated as “As above, so below. As below, so above.” The microcosm level of the human being corresponds to the macrocosm level of the universe. The inner level of objects held in thought corresponds to the outer level of objects in reality.
The Law of Vibration — Also called the Law of Resonance. This law says that everything is in motion. Matter, energy, thoughts… everything is vibration. This law has two subsidiary laws: the Law of Attraction and the Law of Change. The Law of Attraction says that like attracts like — i.e., similar vibrations attract or resonate with one another, and dissimilar vibrations repel one another. For example, health thoughts can attract health; wealth thoughts can attract wealth. The Law of Change says that, since everything is in motion, change is constant and to be expected as normal.
The Law of Polarity — The subsidiary law is the Law of Relativity, which says that everything is relative and nothing exists alone. Everything is relative to other things. The primary law is that everything exists on a spectrum. What are often referred to as polar opposites are the ends of a spectrum but there are points throughout the spectrum which are degrees between the poles or opposite ends.
The Law of Rhythm — This law says that all of life, and even non-life (such as planets, moons, and stars), exists within an order or pattern or combinations of cycles and patterns.
The Law of Cause and Effect — Often described as “As you sow, so shall you reap”. This law states that in interacting systems, actions or events cause or lead to resulting conditions. Cause precedes effect.
The Law of Gender — This law is often referred to as “yin and yang”, and it has two parts. The first part says that within everything there are masculine and feminine energies… masculine being strong, forceful, and assertive; feminine being contemplative, nurturing, and yielding. The second part is that things come in their own time, and that there is a natural gestation period for things to develop and manifest.

Another famous seven laws are the Seven Spiritual Laws of Success from a book of that same name by Deepak Chopra. For many years, I have used these seven laws as subjects for contemplative meditation, and so am quite familiar with them. His seven laws are:

The Law of Pure Potentiality — Spirit is pure consciousness; and we human beings are pure consciousness. Pure consciousness is pure potentiality — the field of all possibilities. The universe is creative and abundant.
The Law of Giving — This law says that the universe operates through dynamic exchange. Energy and intelligence naturally flows. From the human point of view, giving and receiving are necessary to participate in this dynamic process.
The Law of Cause and Effect — Every action generates a force of energy that returns to us in like kind. Giving love brings love to us in return. Giving money or value produces money or value that returns to us in kind.
The Law of Least Effort — Effort can get in the way of natural participation in the universe. Natural effort — that is, effort that is true to one’s own nature — is “least” effort.
The Law of Intention and Desire — Inherent in every intention and desire is the mechanics for its fulfillment; intention and desire in the field of pure potentiality have infinite organizing power. Intention and desire can lead to action (cause) which will produce an effect. Intention and desire are also themselves thoughts (causes) which can create the intended result if clearly focused (attention) in the present.
The Law of Detachment — Detachment is giving up the attachment to the result. It is being free to step into the unknown, the field of all possibilities, and to surrender to the creative intelligence of the universe. It allows the universe at the quantum level to respond and react. It allows creation to happen most freely.
The Law of Purpose in Life — Everyone has a purpose in life based on a unique gift or special talent. When we use this unique talent in service of others, we experience the glory of our own spirit accomplishing a divine goal and living a dream of the soul.

There are occasional references to other spiritual laws such as the Law of Love, the Law of Abundance, the Law of Growth, and the Law of Giving — and these may or may not map to the fourteen laws mentioned above. I think they do, but I will leave it to your reasoning (or imagination) to work out how.

Now, the spiritual laws can be (and have been) studied and analyzed for what they mean to us human beings and for their potential consequences. They can and do have many different or subtle interpretations. But the key thing is that the laws have spiritual meaning and also practical usefulness in how they can be applied to benefit us — both spiritually and materially.

The key is learning how to use the spiritual laws effectively. The laws can be applied singly, but can be used most effectively when taken together or in combination. True spiritual power is when a person knowingly and wisely applies the spiritual laws to produce further insights, spiritual bliss, peace of mind, loving relationships, health, happiness, abundance, and true enjoyment of life.

Spiritual Take-Away:

Learn about the universal or spiritual laws. Get familiar with the laws — the more you learn about the universal laws, the more you are learning about spirit. The more you know the spiritual laws, the more you can apply them. And the more you can apply all of the laws, the more you will be able to use your spiritual power. Through spiritual power you will: come to know yourself, get closer to spirit, change your beliefs, cause new circumstances through your actions, attract what you want in life, feel peace and bliss, and know the spiritual power that connects you to the Universal.

Law of Attraction – Cooperative Reality

Universal Law

There has been an enormous amount of discussion lately about the Law of Attraction,
you could say that the Law of Attraction has gained celebrity status as the personal
development tool of the moment, the current popular method for manifesting your dreams.
What most people don’t realize is that the Law of Attraction is not a new idea, in fact
it’s not even an old idea in the sense that there
was a point in time when somebody coined the phrase and suddenly everyone began using it
like some new appliance. Someone of course did invent the phrase Law of Attraction,
but in the same way that Sir Isaac Newton invented the word gravity. The Law of Attraction
like gravity, just is, no one owns the rights to it, in fact it is impossible to avoid using it.

The Law of Attraction is one of many laws by which mankind has been operating
consciously or unconsciously since the dawn of time. Most people are blissfully unaware
of how these laws affect their lives and equally unaware that the power of these laws can
be harnessed and used to great effect on a daily basis.

Since the release of the movie The Secret, the Law of Attraction has come to the forefront
in peoples minds as the ultimate tool for changing your life
and that is a good thing. I find however that many people after watching
and reading information about the Law of Attraction are still somewhat confused as to how
it actually works. There is a lot of talk about holding images in the mind, sending
thought vibrations out to the universe, maintaining a state of expectation and gratitude,
and waiting for the universe to respond by the Law of Attraction and provide that upon
which you have focussed your intention, and so on. All of these things are very wonderful
and I have found all of them useful in my own learning, but none of these ideas provided me with
truly satisfactory answers about how the Law of Attraction actually works, both
spiritually and scientifically.

Now if you’re anything like me, blind faith just doesn’t cut it, most people like
at least to have some kind of decent explanation for why they should get involved with
the Law of Attraction, otherwise we tend to reject the whole idea outright, which would
be a unfortunate indeed.

Vital Knowledge

The trouble that I think some people have is that they hear about incredible success
stories involving the Law of Attraction, amazing tales of people that have gone from
having an average kind of existence to living a life that most people only dream about,
and then set out in good faith to achieve similar results. Clearly not everyone achieves
the results they had hoped for, why is this? Has the Law of Attraction failed? Are all of
the success stories bogus? Are they just clever ploys to get us to buy books and movies
about how to use the Law of Attraction?

There are many individual claims about the Law of Attraction bringing great abundance
and the fulfillment of great dreams, and there are also charlatans in every area of life,
religious, secular, scientific, but it would be a great mistake to reject a concept of
such potential because of a few con artists, you might as well give up on all personal
development right now.

As for the first idea that the Law of Attraction has somehow failed to work, my own
experience tells me that this is simply not possible, the Law of Attraction is not a
business plan, or a clever scheme that is subject to markets or the moods of individuals,
it is as constant and predictable as the sun rise, all that is required is the appropriate
level of understanding in order to leverage its potential.

This I believe is where a lot of confusion exists, why do some people seem to be able
to apply the Law of Attraction with great affect and others struggle to see the smallest
things manifest? The answer is knowledge, there is a basic lack of understanding about how the Law of
Attraction works. Some people however seem to be able to easily apply the Law of
Attraction and get results even though they have no more knowledge of what is actually
happening than the next person, why is this? It is because some individuals have a mental
pre-disposition to accepting the Law of Attraction, its requirements and outcomes without
question, others don’t and require further instruction about the fundamentals of the
law of attraction before being able to apply themselves properly.

Its a bit like being given a kit for a model aeroplane without the assembly
instructions, some people may have a natural understanding about how to assemble things,
they may have watched their father assembling model aeroplanes in the past, but for
others it will be an almost impossible task, time consuming and frustrating.

It is my experience that with a basic increase in understanding about the Law of
Attraction and the underlying principles that govern it, any individual can begin to see
real results in every area of their life almost immediately. So let’s now take a look
at some of that useful knowledge that will assist us in gaining a better understanding of
how to apply the Law of Attraction to great affect.

The Most Important Thing

The first thing that I would like to say is that the Law of Attraction is not the most
powerful law in the universe, contrary to popular opinion, there are a number of
underlying principles that govern how the Law of Attraction works, and that is where we
shall begin.

I want to start by making this statement; when we use the Law of Attraction, we do not
attract things! this is also contrary to popular opinion. There is not a sports car with
your vibration on it waiting for you to
believe that it’s yours before it appears in the driveway. This may seem a ridiculous
statement, but there are many teachers of the Law of Attraction that state exactly that,
it’s about manifesting things, well it’s not.

The Law of Attraction does not work by you putting out a thought vibration to the
universe and somehow the universe, through the principle of the Law of Attraction,
responds to that thought by sending you the thing that matches that vibration, yet
unfortunately this is what is taught. Some people simply accept this explanation and get
on with using the Law of Attraction to great success, you could call that blind faith,
and I have no problem with that at all, but it won’t work for everyone, and that does
concern me because it can work for everyone.

The most important thing you will ever understand about the Law of Attraction is that
it always involves other people, other minds, other realities, not things. I call this
underlying principle Cooperative Reality and discuss it in detail throughout my book.

Put simply, Cooperative Reality states that in order to apply the Law of Attraction
you require the cooperation of other individuals realities. Understanding this concept
has been the single greatest step in my own personal growth, when I came to this
realization it completely revolutionized my experience in using the Law of Attraction. It
provided me with meaningful direction in the application of all the methods I was
ignorantly using to apply the Law of Attraction.

I have been asked many times to explain my success in using the Law of Attraction, and
I discover that it’s not easy to summarise the concept of Cooperative Reality, and that is
why I decided to write my book entitled
Law of Attraction – Cooperative Reality.
I will however attempt to summarise the book in order to give you at least some idea of
the power of this concept in relation to the Law of Attraction.
I must state however that there will be some ideas that may seem very
unusual, but I assure you there is solid scientific evidence for everything I am putting
forward, again, explained in detail throughout my book.

The Quantum Field

First of all we need to ask the question “what is reality?” and I will begin by
taking a brief look at a concept within Quantum Physics called super position. Briefly
stated super position is referring to sub atomic particles appearing in more than one
place at the same time, in fact the same electron, if I may use this particle as an
example, could appear in as many as 3000 different or potential locations simultaneously,
this phenomenon is referred to in Quantum Physics as a wave function. So the entire
universe being made up of the very tiny world of sub atomic particles exists in super
position, or one of many potential locations, on a universal scale Quantum Physicists call this the Field of

This is great new for us all, it means that your reality is not fixed, it is flexible,
changeable, it can be altered from one form to another, but who does the transforming and how?

The Observer

This brings me to the second point I would like to consider, also a concept used in Quantum
Physics called The Observer, and this principle directly affect and alters the Field of Potential.
So what is The Observer? Well, you are the Observer, along with ever other conscious individual
on the planet. And what does the Observer do? The Observer is responsible for the
collapse of the wave function. What does that mean? Basically it means whenever you
consciously observe the Quantum Field you snap your reality into a single location
in time and space. Scientists conduct complex experiments with particles that bare out this
concept and it certainly aligns with my own experience.

So when we observe the Quantum Field, the world, the universe, what position do we
collapse the wave function to? Where does our reality finish up? Well that is determined
by what you believe, and I’m not referring to your religious allegiance, I’m talking about
what you believe your reality should be with every fibre of your being, which is taught in
the Law of Attraction, it’s just not generally explained that well.
Now you are not the only Observer collapsing the wave function to set reality by what you
believe, everyone is an Observer, and that is of vital importance to understand.
To properly apply the Law of Attraction we need to somehow alter the way other people view reality,
and we will take a look at that shortly.

Rewiring The Mind

Finally we need to consider how it is that we change our fundamental beliefs about
ourselves and about the world. Fortunately for us, the construct of our belief systems
exist within the mind, in the complex structure of neural pathways that make up the
different areas of the brain. I say fortunately, because recent discoveries in neuroscience have
revealed that the neural structure of the brain is highly flexible, not rigid and fixed as scientists first
thought. You are not destined to be locked in to behaviors and attitudes of the past,
ways of thinking and patterns of belief that have been neurologically passed down to you
by your ancestors through your DNA, you possess the power to reconstruct the neural
pathways in your brain and create a brand new construct of reality in your mind.

This is a vital area of knowledge that most Law of Attraction publications do not go
into, some of the common Law of Attraction methods such as, focussed intention, and
holding an image in the mind of a new reality do have an affect on the neural construct
of the brain, but the affect can be temporary, because we are not taught how to solidify
the new construct for use over the long term. The human mind processes roughly 100,000 bits of
information per second, yet we are only consciously aware of around 2000 bits of that
information. What we need to do is begin to learn how to permanently alter the construct
of our neural net in order to perceive a new reality, to become aware of things that we
had never considered before and forever change our deep beliefs about who we are and what
we are doing here.

Putting it all Together

So what does this all mean in relation to using the Law of Attraction more
effectively? Your first goal when attempting to apply the Law of Attraction must be to
alter your fundamental beliefs about what your own reality is in order to begin
collapsing the quantum field to that new reality, but as I mentioned earlier, you are not the
only one that sets reality through belief, and this is where the Law of Attraction really
comes into its own.

As you apply all the methods around the Law of Attraction, visualization, intentions,
gratitude etc, you create a stronger reality for yourself, and that reality connects with
corresponding vibrations in the minds of those around you. You begin to alter other
individuals beliefs in relation to you, and they also begin to collapse the quantum
field in alignment with your new reality. Basically you create a stronger personal
reality that affects those around you, this is no game of chance, but using the
Law of Attraction properly does feel a little like stacking the odds in your favour.
When I first began to really understand and
apply the principles mentioned above, all the small details of my life began to change,
my life went from 80 percent of the things that happened to me being a disappointment to 80
percent of things becoming truly positive and magical virtually overnight.

Your life consists in all the small details that make up your reality, you don’t
need to be somewhere else or do something else in order to be truly happy, using the Law
of Attraction you can begin to quickly transform every area of your life from the mundane
to the incredible, everyone has this ability, all you need is a brain and a choice.

As I said, it is difficult to explain this subject briefly, but I hope you have found
this article helpful in your understanding of the Law of Attraction and how it works.

If you would like to learn more about properly applying the Law of Attraction
and find out about the practical methods I use for changing my own fundamental beliefs and affecting
the reality of those around me, I encourage you to consider reading my book
Law of Attraction – Cooperative Reality, you will find simple practical methods for using the Law of Attraction
and Cooperative Reality, along with clear explanations of all the concepts I have mentioned in this article.

You are an incredible, eternal being, full of power and potential, I wish you every
success in your search for change through the Law of Attraction.

The Universal Laws and The Universal Law of Bollocks

These days you can hardly go through any articles, books, DVDs, movies, films, documentaries with regard to self-improvement or self-help without coming across at least one mentioning of some ‘Universal Law’. Suddenly, there appears to be a Universal Law for anything. Like we haven’t got enough Laws to deal with already!

Listen, there’s some truth to these ‘Universal Laws’, but in most cases, a little nuance is in place. So I ask you, please read along, as I’ll clear it all up in the remainder of this article.

There are Universal Laws that guide our lives behind the scenes. These are actually rather ‘universal principles of life’. That would be a more appropriate qualification. But these days, people are always looking for ‘Universal Laws’. As a consequence, other people who think they know what they’re talking about come up with new ‘Universal Laws’ all the time, in an attempt to set themselves apart from the already giant mass of people talking about ‘Universal Laws’. So in the self-improvement or self-help world, every now and then a new ‘Universal Law’ makes its entrance, in addition to the most widely and most predominantly mentioned Universal Law, which is the Law of Attraction.

The word ‘Law’ appears to be a magic word… Almost a magic wand that casts a spell on anyone who reads it that puts them in a hypnotized state thinking that what it says must be true. After all, it’s a ‘Law’ isn’t it? A ‘Law’ is always right, no more thinking required.

Today, subjects like the ‘Law of Attraction’ are at an all-time high of popularity. We’ve got the movie ‘The Secret’ and a whole big bunch of people trying to leverage on it by proclaiming themselves as ‘experts in the field of the Law of Attraction’. Yes, there’s that magic word (wand) again.

Despite so many people having seen the movie ‘The Secret’ and knowing about the Law of Attraction, there is only a very, very small number of people who are actually living the life of their dreams, or ‘attracting their desires’, or ‘manifesting their dreams’. Yes those are some other ‘magic words’ from today’s common terminology of the self-improvement and self-help industry.

How come? How come, with all that knowledge, with all those ‘Universal Laws’ already written and told about, and with all those new ‘Universal Laws’, ‘Spiritual Laws of the Universe’, ‘Subsidiary Laws’ and so on coming about each and every day on the Internet and elsewhere… How come that all the people buying those books, DVDs, movies, films, documentaries, and so on, are still not ‘attracting their desires’ or ‘manifesting their dreams’?

I’ll tell you why. Most people have heard something about it, but have no real knowledge about the matter. They are aware of the fact that there are ‘Universal Laws, or rather ‘universal principles of life’ that work behind the scenes and guide the courses of their lives. However, they’ve lost track, because so many people who think they know what they’re talking about (while they don’t) come up with new ‘Universal Laws’ all the time, that may have some truth to them, but do nothing more than making things way too difficult and complex to apply.

And besides that, there’s often one big problem when you start reading about the ‘Law of Attraction’ and the ‘Laws of the Universe’. People who speak or write about them tend to so overly symbolic, that few well-thinking people can make any practical sense of it. What they find is nothing but ‘enigmas wrapped in riddles’.

There’s a strong desire for clarity on this subject. Listen, I can come up with hundreds of ‘Universal Laws’ if I want. Here’s a couple of them…

Introducing the Universal Law of Ping Pong
It says you have to use ping pong balls if you want to play table tennis.

Introducing the Universal Law of Rain
It says that when it rains, things get wet.

Disappointing, huh? But they did sound interesting at first, right?! Do you see what’s happening here? The mere qualification of ‘Universal Law’ makes it sound interesting already, while the true deeper meaning of the ‘Universal Law’ is nothing more than a standard blindingly obvious platitude.

So let me give you another Universal Law right now, to satisfy your probably insatiable need (or so you think) for knowledge of all Universal Laws to improve your life, ‘attract your desires’, and ‘manifest your dreams’ once and for all:

Introducing the Universal Law of Bollocks
It says that it’s all bollocks.

That’s right, it’s all bollocks. Bollocks, bollocks, bollocks. There are universal principles guiding your life. If you want, you can call them ‘Universal Laws’. I’ve done so in my books and articles, because that’s what people are looking for these days. If I would apply other terminology, people would never find out about this extremely useful and straightforward knowledge, and would probably never ‘attract their desires’ or ‘manifest their dreams’.

It’s all bollocks, because before this whole game we call ‘human life’ started, we didn’t get an instruction manual on how life was supposed to be lived. The purpose of the whole thing was to find out the universal principles and realize that through applying these principles, YOU can have full control over whatever it is you want to create.

Yes, that’s right, you ‘create’, which is much more than ‘attracting’. But that’s something you’ll discover as you get more experienced in the conscious living of your life and engineering your own success by applying the universal principles of life. Yes, that’s what you can do with the knowledge of these universal principles, or ‘Universal Laws’ if you will.

I talk about Universal Laws in my books, that’s true. But again, people are looking for ‘Universal Laws’ these days, not for universal principles. Because you were looking for ‘Universal Laws’, you were able to find this article. I describe the universal principles of life along 6 main Universal Laws. The names given to these ‘Universal Laws’ are nice, and are probably what you want to hear. However, the bollocks is often in the names. It’s the content discussing the universal principles that makes this knowledge so unique.

Yes, you can do with only 6 main Universal Laws, but that’s more than enough to cover all the ‘subsidiary universal laws’ or ‘spiritual laws of the universe’ or whatever you want to call them that all those people on the Internet seem to come up with these days. These 6 main ‘Universal Laws’ just cover the universal principles of life, without falling for the trap of too many detail and complexity of too many ‘Universal Laws’. All those additional ‘Universal Laws’ or ‘subsidiary laws’ all fall under the Universal Law of Bollocks.

Too keep things simple, you don’t want to lose yourself in the detail. You want just enough straightforward knowledge for simple application of the principles, while still having a total view on the big picture that is comprehensive enough to not forget about any universal principle, or ‘Universal Law’ if you will.

If you want to make life simple for yourself, to start pulling the right strings to create the life and destiny of your dreams, then don’t waste another second on trying to find out every small, detailed, insignificant ‘Universal Law’ someone came up with today. You’ll be like a cat chasing its own tail: a never-ending story that leaves you exhausted and depressed. Just keep it simple, focus on the 6 main Universal Laws that cover all universal principles, and you’ll be off living more than your dreams before you can even consciously realize you created such an incredible experience!

Sounds good? I thought so.

Keep it straightforward and easy-to-apply. The game of life wasn’t intended to be complex and difficult. The game was supposed to be simple and easy, and most of all FUN!

And so it can be, if you don’t make it too hard on yourself.

Nicholas P. Kidd and Henk J.M. Schram are the instigators of the alleged ‘Greatest Revolution of All Time’, which deals with the true secrets of the Law of Attraction and the other Universal Laws in ways much clearer than the ‘enigmas wrapped in riddles’ that usually characterize the descriptions of the Law of Attraction and its application.

They are known for their straightforward explanations of complex issues that they manage to make understandable to people from all walks of life.

Let’s Say Goodbye To Vanity Laws

Once upon a time, in countries far and wide, rulers such as kings and emperors created laws that all subjects living within their realms were forced to obey. If the king or emperor was a fair and just person, the laws they made served the people they ruled and everyone, for the most part, was happy. But inevitably, there came to the thrones within these lands kings and emperors who were not fair and not just. And the laws that these monarchs made caused suffering to their people.

And so it came to pass that people arose in defiance of these monarchs and demanded change. Chief among the demands of the people was that the law be placed above all men – including kings and emperors. They also demanded that laws would not arbitrarily change and that new laws would not be enacted without the consent of the people.

In other words, instead of the King being the law, the law would be King. And those governed by the “Rule of Law” would have an equal voice in the creation and administration of such laws.

Revolutions were brought and many people gave their lives to bring about such change.

This is why we in the United States don’t have things like “King James Law” or “Queen Anne’s Law”. We have public laws, enacted by our elected officials through consent of the people. We live under the Rule of Law and not under the rule of someone making up laws by which we must live. At least, that’s the way it’s suppose to work.

Lately however, we seem to have embraced some sort of macabre fad that ushers in new laws named after people who were victims of one calamity or another. This new law fad has been happening so fast and so frequently that some people have come to call these new laws, “vanity laws”.

You know what I am talking about. I’m talking about Adam’s Law and Mary’s Law and Scott’s Law and God-Only-Knows Law. They are popping up everywhere, in every state, and even on the federal level.

Unfortunately, no one is given a pass in life. Bad things can and do happen to good people. And it is understandable that friends and relatives of people who suffered calamity would want to honor them. When John Lennon was shot out front of the Dakota in New York, people showed up and placed flowers on the ground where he was slain.

Since then, flowers and crosses and pictures and signs and all sorts of memorabilia have shown up on curb sides and fences and everywhere someone perished in an automobile accident or some other tragic event. It has become so prolific that ordinances have been passed to remove these makeshift memorials from the pedestrian way in many cities. While the public seems to have said enough is enough to these roadside shrines, unfortunately the public hasn’t done enough to say enough is enough with vanity laws.

So, I have decided to start. ENOUGH ALREADY WITH VANITY LAWS!

In a democracy, no law should bear the name of anyone. Remember, we are supposed to live under the rule of law through the consent of the people. We are not supposed to live under Joe’s law at the whim of Joe’s weeping relatives.

I know that sounds harsh. But bear with me for a moment longer and I will explain why I am being harsh.

Let’s start with “Katie’s Law”. If you enter the search term, “Katie’s Law” in Google or some other search engine, you are going to find several different Katie’s Laws. That’s because this craze has gotten so big we are starting to run out of names. But in this case, I am referring to Katie’s Law that originated in New Mexico.

In 2003, a young woman by the name of Katie Sepich was brutally attacked and murdered in New Mexico. Although police had little clues to go on, they did find DNA evidence under the fingernails of the victim. The police entered the DNA into the national DNA database and waited to find a match.

Katie’s parents found out that in most states, a person is only required to register their DNA in the national database if they are convicted of a felony. They reasoned that if the law was changed to require anyone arrested on a felony charge to give their DNA to authorities, then the perpetrator of the crime against their daughter might be more quickly found. And so they started the effort to create “Katie’s Law”, which requires just that. In January 2007, Katie’s Law was enacted in New Mexico. Since then, anyone arrested on a felony charge in that state, must register his or her DNA in the national DNA database.

At present, 11 states have laws similar to Katie’s Law and 26 states are considering enacting the law.

Katie’s parents are correct. If people arrested on felony charges are forced to submit to DNA testing, then some cases will be solved that otherwise would not. The actions on the part of Katie’s parents are also understandable. What happened to their daughter was beyond evil and their determination to find the person responsible was and is admirable.

What is not understandable nor admirable however, is the actions of elected officials who put common sense aside and for political gain, seize upon these passionate issues and usher them into law. When they do this, they do not serve the people. They also do not serve the victim in whose name the law will be enacted.

Katie’s Law is a bad law. And I say that for four reasons. First, there is the presumption of innocence that we subscribe to under the laws of this land. You and everyone else in this country is presumed innocent until proven guilty. This being true, how can we force people who have not been convicted of a crime to give up their DNA? I can see no difference in demanding that an accused register their DNA and demanding that every person in the U.S. register their DNA.

Now mind you, I am not talking about requiring someone who is arrested for a specific crime being required to give DNA to compare to other DNA found at that particular crime scene. What Katie’s Law requires is that anyone – for any reason – who is arrested on a felony charge, must submit his or her DNA to the national DNA registry – where it will forever be kept on file.

Secondly, our laws are supposed to preclude authorities from forcing any person to incriminate himself or herself. Every time a person is arrested, police are required to read them their rights. They are told that they have a right to keep silent. They have a right not to incriminate themselves. But how can we tell someone he has a right to keep his mouth shut but no right to protect himself from genetic testing? What Katie’s Law means is that for any reason what-so-ever, police can submit an arrestee’s DNA into the national database to see if they find a match somewhere for some reason. It’s like trolling for a criminal charge.

Once your DNA is registered in the national database, it will remain there for the rest of your life – regardless if you are innocent. Regardless if the charges are dropped. Regardless if you were falsely accused or falsely arrested. You are in the database – forever.

Thirdly, DNA is shared. Two or more people can have the exact same DNA. Identical twins for example, will not have the same fingerprints, but they do have the same DNA. So while DNA evidence is useful for excluding someone from having perpetrated a particular crime, it is not conclusive evidence that someone actually committed a crime.

And finally, there is the simple fact that in a democracy, we should respect law enforcement, but we should never unconditionally trust law enforcement. Contrary to what most people think, when the police arrive at a crime scene they do not start looking at clues that lead them to a suspect. What police generally do is decide on a suspect and then build a case against him or her. If, during the case building phase of the investigation, the police find they cannot obtain sufficient evidence for an arrest, ideally they will look for another suspect and start the whole case building phase again. But in some cases, too often in fact, some police don’t stop when they hit a wall.

Instead they coerce confessions and they resort to torture. That is how innocent people go to prison. With Katie’s Law, we have given these police officials another avenue to build cases. And because of this, one day, a police officer will decide that someone is probably guilty of a crime. And the police officer will reason that if he can just get a sample of that persons DNA then he can tie them to the crime he is investigating. And so that hapless person may find himself stopped by some cop for a simple traffic violation and during the course of that traffic stop the officer will just happen to find a bag of suspicious white powder in that person’s car. Enough white powder to warrant a felony arrest and the requirement that the person submit to DNA sampling.

It is unfortunate; but this will happen. Katie’s Law will be abused by law enforcement to obtain DNA results.

It will make the task of law enforcement easier and faster. And if some poor schmuck has to battle a phony felony charge because of a cop’s shortcut, well, to some cops’ thinking, that’s just collateral damage. Take a look at all the people that are presently being freed because DNA evidence has exonerated them. Then ask yourself the big question that no one seems willing to ask. Ask yourself how all these guys wound up in prison in the first place? The sad, sad, truth is that there are bad cops out there. And Katie’s Law hands these bad cops a new tool in which to do bad things.

Katie’s Law isn’t the only bad law going on the books these days. Vanity laws are being enacted nearly every day in various states. At a minimum, vanity laws are confusing to the public. In their extreme, vanity laws fly in the face of a democratic republic, built upon the rule of law. In our society, laws should never be personal. All laws should be impersonal. They should not be created out of emotion – they should only be enacted out of reason. Katie’s Law is a bad law and vanity laws are a bad idea. We should put a stop to this nonsense before people get hurt and our republic falters.
